Budrys: Transatlantic partnership remains the foundation of Lithuanian and European security

On 25 May, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Kęstutis Budrys met with visiting members of the United States Congress (House of Representatives), Don Bacon and Ed Case.

The meeting focused on the  region's security situation, the strategic partnership between the United States and Lithuania, and underlined the importance of strengthening transatlantic relations and continued support for Ukraine.

"The presence of the U.S. troops in Lithuania is an indispensable element of regional deterrence. We are grateful to the U.S. Congress for its consistent support of the Baltic states, which is crucial for strengthening the security of our region," said Budrys.

The Minister thanked the members of the Congress for their support for the Baltic Security Initiative (BSI) and stressed the importance of its continuity. This year, the Congress approved USD 200 million, aimed at reinforcing the defence capabilities of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.

Budrys also emphasized that Lithuania remains a reliable and responsible NATO ally, allocating 5.38% of GDP to defence this year. In addition, the country consistently strengthens its national capabilities, including through close cooperation with U.S. defence industries.

Members of the U.S. Congress appreciated Lithuania's leadership and demonstrated example in the areas of defense funding and energy independence, thanked for good service and combat training conditions for U.S. troops in Lithuania.

Congressman Don Bacon is a Republican representing the state of Nebraska, who actively serves on both the House Armed Services Committee and the House Agriculture Committee, and has been a co-chair of the House Baltic Caucus since 2021. Congressman Ed Case, a Democrat from Hawaii, member of the Committee on Budget, who consistently supports initiatives related to the security of the Baltic states.
