Gabrielius Landsbergis at the meeting with the Foreign Secretary of the Philippines: “We need to join the International Law Protection Coalition”
On April 24, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gabrielius Landsbergis, met with Philippine Foreign Secretary Enrique A. Manalo. It is the first visit of the Lithuanian Foreign Minister to the Philippines.
The meeting focused on bilateral relations between Lithuania and the Philippines, economic cooperation, and security. The Foreign Minister noted that Lithuania was ready to start developing bilateral projects with the Philippines in the fields of economic cooperation and security and that Lithuania’s experience in energy could be helpful when aiming to resist China’s aggressive actions in the South China Sea and invited representatives of the Philippines to participate in the conference on the fight against economic coercion in Vilnius.
“We see the Philippines as a growing, stabilising force in ASEAN and a wider region. Lithuania wants to expand and deepen our partnership, to diversify supply chains, to strengthen economic security, and to defend the rules-based international order,” Foreign Landsbergis said.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister welcomed the Philippines’ consistent stance in support of all United Nations resolutions on Ukraine and stressed that security threats facing the South China Sea and the war against Ukraine were challenges posed by revisionist forces, which had to be answered unanimously.
“The rules-based international order in the world will remain only in the event of Ukraine’s victory and when Russia will be held accountable for all violations of international law. We must help Ukraine in its fight. It will also provide an opportunity to ease the pressure in the South China Sea region,” Landsbergis said.
The meeting discussed the potential to deepen economic cooperation in lasers, information technology, academic exchange, culture and sports.
Both interlocutors also participated in signing memoranda of cooperation between Lithuanian and Philippine basketball and football federations.
"It is clear that our dynamic relationship should include work and sports. Thus, I am pleased that today we will witness the signing of two bilateral memoranda of understanding between our basketball and football federations,” Landsbergis said.
