On 3 September, on the sidelines of the European Union (EU) General Affairs Council (GAC), Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Sigitas Mitkus met with Vsevolod Chentsov, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration.

Mitkus emphasized that EU membership is a fundamental guarantee of security and a strategic investment in Europe’s resilience. Lithuania consistently maintains the position that the clusters of negotiation chapters must be opened as soon as possible.

“Ukraine’s path to the EU must be steady and swift. Lithuania strongly supports Ukraine’s aspiration to join the EU and urges it to continue reforms that would ensure further progress in accession negotiations,” said the Vice Minister.

The meeting addressed the progress of reforms being implemented in Ukraine and the need to ensure the consistent implementation of requirements of the Fundamentals cluster. Both countries agree that it is essential to maintain the momentum of the negotiations, continue reforms, and strengthen cooperation in all areas related to Ukraine’s European integration.

Mitkus emphasized that Lithuania will continue to be an active partner of Ukraine and will fully support its European integration process. It was also noted that the EU's enlargement and issues related to Ukraine's EU membership will be among the main priorities of Lithuania's Presidency of the Council of the EU.
