Vice-Minister Mitkus met with the ambassadors-designate of Peru and El Salvador

On 27 August Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Sigitas Mitkus met with the designated Peruvian Ambassador Jorge Renato Reyes Tagle to the Republic of Lithuania, resident in Helsinki, and the designated Salvadoran Ambassador Ricardo Alfonso Cisneros Rodriguez to the Republic of Lithuania, resident in Stockholm.

On 27 August Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Sigitas Mitkus met with the designated Peruvian Ambassador Jorge Renato Reyes Tagle to the Republic of Lithuania, resident in Helsinki, and the designated  Salvadoran Ambassador Ricardo Alfonso Cisneros Rodriguez to the Republic of Lithuania, resident in Stockholm.

The Ambassadors of Peru and El Salvador congratulated Lithuania and wished it success as it prepares to assume the Presidency of the Council of the EU, starting in January 2027. At the meetings, representatives from both countries also expressed interest in Lithuania’s high-tech sector, particularly biotechnology, financial and green technologies, as well as opportunities for academic cooperation.

Discussions with the Peruvian ambassador focused on opportunities to expand economic ties and the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, which will be celebrated in June 2027. Both sides also discussed Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine, emphasizing the need to keep this issue high on the international agenda. The Vice-Minister thanked Peru for its consistent support for Ukraine at the United Nations.

With a view to resuming political dialogue, both sides agreed to hold the first round of bilateral political consultations in the near future.
During the meeting with the Ambassador of El Salvador, the Vice-Minister presented Lithuania’s business environment and progress in the fields of information technology, finance, and other high technologies, including the country’s experience in developing biotechnology and green technologies, as well as the growth of Lithuania’s unicorn ecosystem. They also discussed next steps in implementing the memorandum of understanding on the establishment of a bilateral consultation mechanism, the ratification of which will pave the way for intensifying political dialogue and expanding practical cooperation.

Diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Peru were established on 9 June 1997, and with El Salvador on 15 October 1999.
